Chapter 1: Regulating the roads
Signs, markings and rules are what let thousands of strangers share a road safely. This chapter covers the six sign groups, what road markings mean, where to position your car, who gives way to whom, how to treat emergency vehicles and pedestrians, and how to signal clearly.12 sectionsAbout 25 minpp. 13–32Chapter 2: Driving inside city limits
City streets pack lanes, junctions, roundabouts, parked cars and pedestrians into a small space, so most of the work is choosing the right position early and seeing trouble in time. This chapter covers lane choice, one-way streets, roundabouts, how your eyes scan the road, changing lanes, overtaking limits, children and other vulnerable pedestrians, stopping and parking, and U-turns.11 sectionsAbout 25 minpp. 36–48Check against current rulesChapter 3: Driving outside city limits
Outside town the roads are faster, and mistakes cost more. This chapter covers checking the car before you leave, choosing a safe speed, bends, the three-second rule, roadworks, joining and leaving main roads, overtaking, motorway driving and lane discipline, and finally dirt roads and off-road driving.12 sectionsAbout 30 minpp. 52–71Check against current rulesChapter 4: Driving under difficult conditions
Gulf weather is usually fine and hot, but heat, glare, darkness, fog, wind and rain each change how a car behaves and how much you can see. This chapter covers preparing the car, coping with summer heat, driving and using your headlights at night, and what to do in fog, high winds, rain, floods, aquaplaning and skids.11 sectionsAbout 25 minpp. 74–86Check against current rulesChapter 5: Critical situations
Most accidents follow a small number of familiar patterns, and nearly all of them start with a driver’s decision. This chapter looks at why accidents happen, the typical mistakes behind each type of collision, how junction design affects the outcome, animals on the road, and what to do when an accident, breakdown or fire does happen.12 sectionsAbout 22 minpp. 91–105Check against current rulesChapter 6: Driving behaviour and road courtesy
How you think and feel behind the wheel matters as much as how well you handle the car. This chapter looks at maturity and responsibility, the personality traits and habits that lead to accidents, stress and group pressure, and the things that reduce your ability to drive: fatigue, illness, medicines, alcohol, drugs and distractions.12 sectionsAbout 25 minpp. 109–127Check against current rulesChapter 7: Getting to know your car
A car that is looked after is safer, cheaper to run and kinder to the environment. This chapter explains what the main systems do, from the engine, cooling and electrics to the brakes, tyres and steering, and which checks you can make yourself. It ends with economical driving, carrying loads, vehicle inspection and insurance.14 sectionsAbout 30 minpp. 131–154Check against current rulesChapter 8: Safety while driving
A modern car is built to protect you, but only if you use its safety equipment the way it was designed. This chapter covers the car’s protective shell, seats and head restraints, seat belts, airbags and child seats, then the natural laws that decide how quickly you can stop, how fast you can take a bend and how a car behaves on a slope or under load.10 sectionsAbout 25 minpp. 159–173Check against current rulesChapter 9: Avoiding danger on the road
This short appendix is about how you see risk. It explains where your sense of danger comes from, asks you some honest questions about your own driving, names the four skills of hazard perception and then lets you practise spotting hazards in pictures. Use it as a revision exercise once you have studied the chapters.4 sectionsAbout 8 minpp. 177–181Check against current rulesChapter 10: Road signs and road markings
The handbook ends with two illustrated appendices: every road traffic sign, grouped by family, and every road marking. This module explains how each family looks and behaves, then the lines painted across and along the road. Use the searchable Road signs library alongside it to look up any individual sign.9 sectionsAbout 20 minpp. 185–224
